Walmart Unwraps Christmas Values Early

Wednesday, Oct 1, 2008

(Bentonville, AR) In 3,500 stores across the U.S., Walmart today reduced prices on some of the most popular toys, signaling its intention to be first this Christmas. Over the next 10 days the retailer will fast track the opening of Christmas shops in stores nationwide.

A new company survey shows consumers said they will start their Christmas shopping earlier and make other changes to help stretch their holiday cash.

The 2008 Holiday Shopping Intentions Survey, conducted on behalf of Walmart, was designed to learn what's on America's Christmas list this year, and what the gift buying priorities are for this coming Christmas season.

In addition, the survey measures how the recent economic downturn may affect things ranging from how much consumers will spend on gifts, whom Americans will be shopping for, to how much people plan to give in charitable donations during the holiday season.

The survey finds more than one-third of Americans buy gifts for their children first. Walmart has identified 10 popular toys, priced each at $10, to help parents get a head start. The toys are:

-- Barbie and her dog, Tanner
-- Barbie Mariposa (a beautiful butterfly-winged Barbie)
-- Play-Doh Ice Cream Shop
-- Assorted Littlest Pet Shop VIPs
-- Hot Wheels Trick Tracks
-- Hot Wheels Beast Bash
-- Fur Real Newborn Animals
-- Tonka Light and Sound Vehicles
-- Doll Stroller
-- Backugan by Spinmaster

In addition to the values, Walmart.com is currently accepting pre-orders for the highly-anticipated release of Elmo Live. The latest Elmo will be available in-stores and online on October 14, but customers can reserve their Elmo Live today by pre-ordering at http://www.walmart.com/elmo.

Walmart's decision to focus on price and bring Christmas to life early is reinforced by the Holiday Shopping Intentions Survey. Key findings include: Timing -- Women begin making their Christmas lists farther in advance of Christmas than men.

o Women are significantly more likely than men to have already started making their Christmas shopping lists (29 percent vs. 17 percent).
o Men are much more likely than women to wait until the last minute to make their shopping lists (30 percent of males wait until December vs. 13 percent of women).
o Younger adults are more likely to start Christmas shopping earlier this year than older adults.
-- More than half of American adults (51 percent) age 18-24 plan on starting their Christmas shopping at least 1 month earlier this year. -- More than one-third of Americans buy gifts for their children first followed then by presents for a spouse or significant other and a parent.
o While men are most likely to buy a present for their spouse or significant other first (28 percent vs. 8 percent), women are much more likely to buy a present for one or more of their children first (43 percent vs. 25 percent).

Walmart Black Friday Predictions

CLICK HERE to see the Deal

What's likely to be on sale: Everything. The retailer will be cutting prices early and often this season -- like announcing a $10 toy deal at the start of October -- to try to get the scoop on everyone and keep its #1 position. Expect laptops in the $299 range, popular video games for $10 and toys for practically nothing.

Prediction: Walmart will win in holiday sales, but extra-deep discounting will hurt the bottom line.

thanks to the economizer

Walmart to sell iPhone 3G?

Here’s an interesting story. Wal-Mart may end up selling iPhone in its stores. Apparently, the first iPhone 3Gs will hit, we guess select, Wal-Mart stores on November 15th, which is just under two weeks before Black Friday.

The problem with this story and why are we saying “select stores” is the iPhone activation process. Remember the rule - you can’t leave the store before activating your beloved handset. That could be the problem and the solution seems obvious - make iPhone 3Gs available in urban areas, only or at least in the areas where AT&T’s 3G network actually works. Otherwise, who needs a 3G-enabled iPhone without the proper coverage.

The move would certainly help Apple drive iPhone 3G sales through the roof and beat any analyst’s expectations. We’ll see where this goes, it’s still a rumor after all…

PostPosted: Sat Oct 18, 2008 7:19 pm    Post subject: Why Walmart might be early on price slashing and a note on the iPhone 3G Reply with quote

Black friday is usually the kick-off of the holiday season. This year it is a week later than last and Wal-Mart is anticipating that with the current condition of the economy it may experience an unprecedented decrease in sales over a previous year. Stores that were once closed the entire day for Thanksgiving are now keeping there doors open to make up for possible losses.

On a good note I think we can expect to see more name brand products on sale this holiday season. They seem to be trying to shed the reputation as a off-brand toting discount store. This can definatly be seen in the recent months with the inclusion of brands like Sharp, Sony, and Panasonic to their TV lineup. We can see less of the less than durable durabrand and less ilo.

Things we can all expect to see in the add at least in the electronic area, which is what most people seem to watch for will be computers both laptop and desktops ranging right around 250 and 300, portable DVD players around 50, blu-ray players 200-250 including a choice of 5- 10 movies. Expect to see GPS units and bluetooths more prevalent this year as this is a huge growth with new hand-free laws. I predict that through the holiday season you can expect the PS2 to drop to 99 from its current 129. If you've been trying to find a wii expect them to become more available this holiday season as they have recently become more scarce which may indicate Nintendo is stockpiling them along with the Wii Fit.

As for the rumor that Wal-Mart will be carrying the iPhone I think it is unlikely that this will happen. There was a similar rumor last year that Wal-mart bought all the discontinued 4GB models of the original iPhone and I have yet to see Wal-Mart selling them. Also with the new requirement for in store activation, Wal-Mart would have to revamp there entire system to accommodate apple. Apple and AT&T brag of their exclusivity and I doubt they would give it up for Wal-Mart.

I'd like to end this with a tip for your shopping this season. Whether it be Walmart, sears, target, or wherever, take advantage of service plans if they are offered. The biggest argument against buying these is that its usually 100% profit for the store and does you no good. Its also said that its best to see if the manufacturer has a extension offered. Keep in mind that the manufacturer and store warranties are nearly identical in what the cover but when it comes to price the store usually is cheaper. Also it may be 100% profit for the store, but in the event that the unfortunate does happen it will be 100% loss for you if you are not covered.

Happy holidays and happy shopping everyone!

From DrewskiDouble from SD:

Rumor: Compaq Laptop for $298 @ Wal-Mart on BF

A huge pallet of about 100 of these was rolled into a special room next to the manager's office last night. Posted below is a quick picture I snapped with my phone before it got carted away. I apologize in advance for the blurryness of the picture, but I had very little time to do it in the very dim lighted back hallway. This is the same laptop that was on WalMart.com a couple months back but was taken down before anyone could order it. I'm definately NOT a higher-up so I can't confirm if this is nationwide.

Blurry Picture

As speculated in an earlier forum the model is indeed the CQ50-139WM FOR ONLY $298

Intel Celeron Processor 575 (2.00 GHz, 1MB Cache, 667MHz front-side bus

Integrated microphone
SuperMulti EX DVD +/- R/RW drivve with Double Layer Support

Intel Graphics Media Accelerator 4500MHD with up to 765MB total video memory
802.11b/g wireless LAN

Walmart deals include 15.4-inch $298 Compaq notebook

As part of a price drop campaign it is calling Operation Main Street, Walmart on Thursday announced it will cut back prices of many popular products over the next seven weeks, in time for the holidays. The more noteworthy items include a Magnavox Blu-ray player, the NB500MG9, priced at $198, down from its regular price of $229. It is capable of upconverting standard DVD movies and will support Dolby Digital and DTS surround sound formats. A 2GB Sony Walkman MP3 player will be priced at $49.
The doorcrasher, though, is likely the Compaq CQ-139WM notebook PC for just $298. The notebook sports a 15.4-inch screen and comes with a 160GB hard disk drive along with 2GB of RAM. Unfortunately, no other specifications are known about the system.

Finally, buyers of a $399 Sony PlayStation 3 gaming system will receive a $100 Walmart gift card as a bonus, while those who opt for the older PlayStation 2 system priced at $129 will receive a $30 gift card. To provide them with games to play on the PS3 system, the retailer has priced many popular games at $19.82, including MotorStorm, WarHawk and Resistance. The prices are due to come into effect on Saturday, November 8th.

Strictly Rumor: iPhone 3G may come to a Walmart near you on November 15 in time for Black Friday

Back in June we broke the news that Apple would be mixing things up a bit by moving away from its prior iPhone distribution model and getting a couple of nation-wide retailers in on the action. A little more than two months later, Best Buy indeed began carrying the iPhone 3G as we reported. The other retailer we mentioned however, Radio Shack, did not. We’re not sure if the Apple and the Shack hit a wall during negotiations or if we still may see the iPhone 3G pop up there but in the meantime, it looks like another major retailer has swooped down and stolen Radio Shack’s thunder. One of our ninjas has it on good authority that Wal-Mart will begin selling the iPhone 3G next month - on November 15th to be exact. If Wal-Mart is indeed getting the iPhone 3G, the timing makes sense with Black Friday coming just under two weeks later. Bringing the iPhone 3G to Walton’s wonder would definitely help ease the congestion a bit for those heading out to snag an iPhone 3G as a gift. Then again, considering you can’t leave a store without activating the handset first, we doubt the iPhone 3G will sell anywhere near as well as the iPhone did under the previous activation model here in the US. Well, that and the little problem we seem to be having with the economy…

NEW YORK (CNNMoney.com) -- Wal-Mart is highlighting flat screen TVs, Blu-ray players, Xbox 360 consoles and home computers in its much-anticipated Black Friday deals this year, according to a copy of the retailer's circular obtained by CNNMoney.com.

Black Friday - the day after Thanksgiving - is one of the busiest shopping days for the nation's retailers. Black Friday is of particular interest this year because the country is experiencing a sharp slowdown in consumer spending.

Wal-Mart (WMT, Fortune 500) is not expected to officially unveil its Black Friday deals until Nov. 24. But as more Americans cut their holiday gift budgets this year, many will likely turn to discounters such as Wal-Mart in search of bargains.

According to the circular, Wal-Mart's so-called doorbuster deals offered between 5 a.m. and 10 a.m. ET will include a 50-inch Samsung plasma HDTV ($798), Magnavox Blu-ray player ($128), Xbox 360 ($199) sold with free Guitar Hero III Legends of Rock game and wireless guitar, HP Pavilion desktop computer ($398) and a UniFlame gas grill ($175).

In addition, Wal-Mart's Black Friday ad shows a GE microwave for $25, children's clothing priced between $4 and $8 and a variety of toys, including a Hannah Montana doll for $10 or less.

Wal-Mart spokeswoman Melissa O'Brien declined to address the leaks from the Black Friday sales circular, saying only that "we plan to share the facts directly with customers on Monday, Nov. 24th."

Still, the retailer in recent days has made no secret of its intention to aggressively court this year's budget-conscious holiday shoppers.

Last week, the retailer said it would offer more discounts on thousands of products over the next seven weeks.

Judging from other leaked Black Friday ads, additional retailers are also readying huge discounts in a bid to tempt reluctant shoppers.

Sears' leaked Black Friday circular, which appeared last month on linknotallowed.com, a Web site that markets itself as one of many "official" Black Friday deals sites, showed the retailer would offer deals on washer-dryers, a category that Sears' hasn't heavily promoted in the past.

One of Sears' standout deals for Black Friday is a Kenmore high efficiency front-load washer-dryer set for $599.99. That's as much as 50% off the price of the individual washer and dryer.

"This really is an incredible deal, and it indicates how nervous retailers are about the season," said Britt Beemer, retail analyst and chairman of America's Research Group
