EA Updates Rock Band Track List, Adds PS2 Version

Rock Band will be coming to the PlayStation 2, at least in Europe. That's the word today from Electronic Arts, who announced further plans for Harmonix's upcoming ultimate music game at Games Convention in Germany.

Rock Band for PS2, PS3, and Xbox 360 will hit Europe in early 2008. The only versions currently announced for the US are PS3 and 360, but we'll get them this holiday season. The PS2 version will feature "many" of the same features as the next-gen games, and have some exclusive features of its own. What those are is still unknown.

New tracks announced today include monsters of rock such as Deep Purple's "Highway Star" and Jet's "Are You Gonna Be My Girl." Europe will get its own track list, featuring on-disc and downloadable content localized to the EU's particular musical tastes. If they in fact have any. I've seen the Eurovision song contests, and I have my doubts.

Despite retailers preemptively pricing the Rock Band bundle and individual instruments on their product page, Harmonix and MTV have never really settled on an official price per se. As of today, that cloud of uncertainty has been dispelled. GameSpot confirmed via a Harmonix representative that the recent changes of Rock Band product pages at retail stores indeed reflect the official pricing and release date. The Harmonix representative also confirmed a pricing and release date for the recently announced PS2 bundle. For convenience, I’m going to use EB Games and Amazon as reference:

Rock Band Special Edition “bundle” (mic, drums, guitar, game) - PS3 & 360: $169.99, PS2: $159.99
Rock Band Game (no instruments) - PS3 & 360: $59.99
Rock Band Mic - PS3 & 360: $29.99
Rock Band Drums - PS3 & 360: $79.99
Rock Band Wireless Guitar - PS3: $59.99, 360: $79.99

It’s even more obvious now that the bundle is the better buy. With the previously rumor of a $200 bundle, I was seriously considering buying just the game and guitar. Now with the 360 guitar at $80 and the game itself at $60, it would be silly to not fork over the extra $30 for the whole kit. Then again, I plan on getting the Guitar Hero III bundle for $99 come October 27th. If it turns out the GH3 guitar is compatible with Rock Band, I may still hold off getting the Rock Band bundle. Yeah, the Rock Band guitar seems nicer, but I’m cheap like that.

The official release date of Rock Band for PS3 and 360 is November 23rd, 2007. The official release date for Rock Band for PS2 is December 10th, 2007. And yes, the PS2 version will have its instruments available for individual purchase. No word on pricing for the PS2 instruments, but for now we’ll assume they will match the PS3’s individual instrument pricing. We’ll also assume the Rock Band PS2 guitar will be wireless like the PS3. If you are wondering why the PS3 wireless guitar is significantly cheaper than the 360, bring yourself up to par by reading here. Despite the similar price, the bundles for each platform are not the same.

Since Rock Band’s release date now falls on North America’s ubiquitous Black Friday, I can see a lot of anxiety building up among those pre-ordering. Who in there right mind wants to go and pick that big box up at 8am, let alone try to push it through the droves of soccer moms? Let’s just hope the stores keep an adequate stock for all. I’d hate to see some Tickle-Me-Elmo throwback fights for “the last box” of the Rock Band bundle. You hear me EB Games? Don’t sell my pre-order to some sobbing soccer-mom because I waited to show up late in the day. I loves me some beauty sleep

As you may know, Rock Band is in great demand, and the initial industry supply will be limited across the U.S. In an effort to provide as many customers as possible with the opportunity to purchase Rock Band, we are limiting the number of Rock Band customers can purchase. As a result, each household may only purchase up to 1 copy of Rock Band. Once inventory is available, we will evaluate the purchase limit policy and implement changes as needed.

Rock Band setlist revealed
Harmonix rhythm game to feature 58 tracks, 51 of which will be original master recordings.

Activision's Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock struck the first blow in this holiday season's battle of the bands with its arrival in stores yesterday, but Rock Band creators Harmonix and MTV Games are ready to hit back. Rock Band demo kiosks began appearing in Best Buy stores over the weekend, and this morning the game's main setlist was finally announced.

When it's released in North America on November 20, Rock Band for the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 will feature 58 songs, 51 of which will be original master recordings. However, the games that come in the box are only part of the Rock Band plan. MTV and Harmonix are planning to release a steady stream of downloadable songs and albums for the game, including The Who's Who's Next and a selection of tracks from The Grateful Dead's body of work.

A PlayStation 2 edition of Rock Band will be released on December 18 in North America. The game is also scheduled for a European release in the first quarter of 2008. The main setlist of 45 songs is listed below. An additional 13 tracks from a variety of established and independent artists will also be unlocked as players progress in the game. MTV and Harmonix did not specify if the PS2 version's setlist would be identical to its current-generation counterparts.
