Key Industry Executives Available for Interview, More Than 500 New Toys on Display, Toy Wishes Fab Five and Hot Dozen Revealed

NEW YORK--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Recognized as the ‘official’ industry kick-off to the holiday family entertainment shopping and editorial season, Toy Wishes Magazine, The Ultimate Guide to Family Entertainment, will host its sixth annual Toy Wishes Holiday Preview on Tuesday, October 2nd at Jacob Javits Convention Center in New York City.

The Toy Wishes Holiday Preview was created in 2002 for industry manufacturers to showcase and spotlight holiday family entertainment, including toys, videogames and properties all under one roof and an opportunity for members of the press to ‘shop’ for toys and entertainment products to feature in their holiday and gift editorial. In addition to major toy manufacturers, exhibitors will include entertainment companies, licensors and retailers.

The exciting day-long event will begin with the announcement of this year’s Toy Wishes Holiday 2007 Fab Five - five innovative products that do not require batteries or feature electronics predicted to be top sellers this holiday season - and the Holiday 2007 Hot Dozen – the toys predicted to be the most in demand and toughest to find once the buying season gets underway - at a 10 AM press conference. The All Stars, Fab Five and Hot Dozen will be on display throughout the day.

“Each year, we accurately predict the hottest toy and entertainment products of the season. In 2006, we named T.M.X. Electric guitar, Smart Cycle expected to be best-sellers

Hasbro Inc.'s electronic guitar and toys that promote exercise may be among the best-selling gifts this holiday season, the biggest test of toy demand after the recall of more than 20 million Chinese-made products.

The Power Tour Electric Guitar by Hasbro and the Smart Cycle by Mattel Inc.'s Fisher-Price are among the "Hot 20" chosen by Toy Insider, a supplement that will appear in the November issue of Hearst Corp.'s Redbook magazine.

China, the world's biggest exporter of consumer products, has faced pressure from global regulators to strengthen safety checks after products from contaminated toothpaste to tainted pet food and toy trains containing lead paint were recalled. About 80 percent of U.S. toys are produced in China. advertisement

"With all the concern about recalls and safety, parents will be out there looking for information on toys, especially for younger children," Jonathan Samet, co-founder of the Toy Insider, said Monday. "A trend will definitely be more toward exercise toys that get kids off the couch."

Mattel, the world's largest toymaker, last week apologized to China and took blame for design problems in its products. The company, which makes 65 percent of its toys in China, sent an executive to meet with the country's product-safety chief and apologize in front of reporters and TV cameras.

The fourth quarter, which includes holiday shopping between Thanksgiving and Christmas, accounts for more than a third of annual revenue for Mattel and Hasbro, the two biggest toymakers in the world.

U.S. toy sales this year through July climbed 3.3 percent to $9.3 billion from $9 billion from the same period a year earlier, according to the NPD Group Inc., a Port Washington, New York-based research firm. Of 11 categories, vehicle sales had the biggest year-over-year gain, at 15 percent. Sales of infant and preschool items climbed 11 percent and youth electronics 9 percent.

The recalls made the panel "very careful" during the selection process, said Samet, the publisher of Adventure Publishing Group's Toy Book, a trade magazine covering the industry since 1983. The selection panel checked U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission reports to make sure none of the chosen items had any safety issues, he said.

This year's list include Lego A/S's motorized Monster Dino and Playmobil UK Ltd.'s Rescue Hospital Playset.

Lego and Playmobil make most of their toys in Europe, Samet said.

Disk Launcher for Moving Target Practice Don't settle for stationary targets! The durable, hard plastic disk launcher stores up to 12 foam disks for moving target practice. A wireless remote cartridge that attaches to the top of the blaster lets you control when to send the disk flying. When the "launch" button is pressed, the disk launcher commences a beeping countdown with three lights so you can get ready to shoot. But there's more. With two different height settings, you can shoot the disk seven or nine feet. You can also launch the disks at multiple angles: straight up, or 45 degrees to the right or left. Fast and Accurate Blaster Gun The blaster gun shoots micro darts with speed and accuracy. Made with sturdy yellow, black, and silver plastic, the blaster has a contoured handle with a loop for hanging the gun when not in use. Equipped with six darts, the blaster stores five darts at the front of the gun and one in the barrel. To shoot, simply draw back the bright orange cocking mechanism, pull the trigger, and watch it fly. The wireless remote features a fin on top for quick aiming. With rubber-like plastic tips, the foam darts stick hard to the durable disk targets. To increase the challenge, there's a target on both sides of the foam disks and, with a yellow and black side, the disks can be loaded for day or nighttime use. Put to the Test The game combinations are virtually endless. With a score card for target hits, the N-Strike Disk Shot lets you compete against a friend or play against your own best records. The only downsides to the Disk Shot are the noise of the launcher and the multiple angle settings. The fan engine sound is enough to bother parents, but not enough to stop the fun for kids. And when we positioned at a 45-degree angle, our test disk launcher got stuck in that position. While it could be forcibly adjusted, it is probably not good for the disk launcher. The disk launcher is compatible with other N-Strike blasters. The wireless remote attaches to any blaster with a rail system. Two "AAA" batteries (sold separately) are required for the wireless remote.
