Wal-Mart is offering the promotion to attract recession-weary shoppers during the crucial holiday season, when toy retailers record up to 40 percent of annual sales. Additionally, Walmart stores will match any local competitor's advertised offer on the same toy product if it falls below $10. That offer will expire after Christmas. During last year's holiday season, the Bentonville, Ark.-based retailer promoted just 10 toys at the $10 price. The toy push comes as Wal-Mart works to hold on to gains it has made during the recession as bargain-conscious consumers have traded down to cheaper products and focused on the necessities — both its specialties. Wal-Mart Chairman Robson Walton said Wednesday that "sales have been tough," despite gains from its Asian operations. "I think this recovery is going to be a slow one," Walton told a global CEO business conference in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. Some of the toys Wal-Mart is promoting this holiday include Barbie Cut and Style Rapunzel, a Play-Doh Burger Builder Set, Transformers Revenge of the Fallen Deluxe Action Figures, and My Little Pony So Soft Newborn. Several board games are available for $10, including Connect 4, Battleship, Monopoly, Trouble and Jenga, among others. After last year's dismal holiday, toy retailers are ramping up competition for consumers' dollars as the crucial holiday season approaches. Wal-Mart's promotion comes as Toys R Us is aggressively expanding shelf space, opening 350 pop-up stores in malls and at its Babies R Us locations, while Sears will offer toys at 20 of its stores. Most of those stores will remain open after their regular closing hour of 11 p.m., allowing customers to remain inside to wait for the “Black Friday” special prices that start at 5 a.m., David Tovar, a company spokesman, said today in a telephone interview. Walmart, the world’s largest retailer, developed plans for each of its stores to manage the flow of customers as they get in, seek discounted merchandise, check out and leave on “Black Friday.” The store in Valley Stream, New York, where Jdimytai Damour, a temporary worker, was trampled on Nov. 28, 2008, is among those staying open overnight, Tovar said. “We would anticipate not having these long lines outside the stores,” Tovar said from Bentonville, Arkansas, where Walmart is based. The company’s 2,705 supercenters, which sell general merchandise and groceries, already operate 24 hours a day. The holiday shopping season traditionally starts on so- called Black Friday, the day after Thanksgiving, which falls on Nov. 26 this year. Jockeying for discounted merchandise may intensify this year as rising unemployment makes consumers more desperate for bargains and retailers deepen markdowns to spur sales, National Retail Federation executives said yesterday on a conference call. Spreading Items The NRF recommended merchants coordinate crowd control with local police and assign employees to interact with shoppers, as well as spread discounted items, which Walmart plans to do. Such steps are intended to “lessen the anxiety of those lines of customers,” Rhett Asher, the NRF’s vice president of loss prevention, said on the call. “The times are tough for everybody. It’s no secret that customers are working harder for those deals.” In May, Walmart agreed to a crowd-control plan for Black Friday events at its New York stores to avoid prosecution in Damour’s death. The agreement with Nassau County District Attorney Kathleen Rice didn’t include an admission of guilt or wrongdoing by the retailer. Walmart rose 31 cents to $52.31 at 4:01 p.m. in New York Stock Exchange composite trading. The shares have slumped 6.7 percent this year. Last year, this time, Walmart was threatening lawsuits for leaked ads. This year, they aren't being as aggressive, but their communications with Black Friday sites has been spotty. Today, the Walmart team was willing to confirm the following deals with us: "...we can confirm the following items: -- Magnavox Blu Ray Disc Player for $78 -- Sanyo 50" Plasma HDTV for $598 -- Tom Tom 3.5" GPS for $59 -- Kids' licensed character sleepwear $3 -- $7 fleece reversible jackets for the family -- Barbie Power Wheels Ride-On $88 We welcome all of our customers to shop us first for unbeatable prices! Our stores will match the price of any local competitor's printed ad for an identical product." As we've covered before, many other Walmart ads/deals have been leaked. The list above hardly addresses the many other items rumored. To add to the confusion, throughout the month, Walmart has been issuing Black Friday-like Rollback specials online as well as in-store Saturday-only specials. This holiday season, retail watchers expect sellers to duke it out with deep discounts on some models of HDTVs. According to the circular, other early bird deals on Black Friday include a 32-inch Emerson LCD 720p HDTV for $248, and a 42-inch Emerson Plasma 720p HDTV ($448). One of the juiciest Black Friday deals from Wal-Mart's rival Target reportedly is a 32-inch Westinghouse LCD HDTV for $246. In the computer section, Wal-Mart's deals in the leaked circular include an eMachine laptop with a 15.6-inch LCD display, 2GB memory and 160GB hard drive for $198; a Hewlett-Packard laptop with a 15.6-inch display, 3GB memory and 250GB hard drive for $298; a Philips 4GB MP3/video player for $29; and an Xbox 360 console with three games for $199. Other deals in electronics and appliances in Wal-Mart's Black Friday ad include an 8GB iPod Touch for $195 with a $50 iTunes gift card; $4 home appliances including a slow cooker and mini-mixer, $2 DVDs, and select toys priced between $5 and $9. Wal-Mart, the world's largest retailer, is not expected to officially unveil its Black Friday deals until Nov. 23. Separately, Wal-Mart said Monday that it isn't waiting until Black Friday to further chop prices on gadgets and toys.
